Tips for Drawing on a Shared Canvas

We built Magma to let artists all over the world connect and make amazing art together. Collaborating with others on a canvas can lead to great things, but it’s important that every artist does their part in keeping the drawing experience safe, fun, and respectful. Here are a few tips and best practices to ensure things go smoothly.

Shared Canvas Best Practices

Respect others’ artwork: Don’t draw over or mess with the artwork others have created. If you want to add something to what another artist drew, give them a heads up through the chat first to make sure they’re okay with it.

Share the canvas fairly: Ensure you’re not occupying an excessive amount of canvas space and leave room for others to contribute.

Encourage others: Support other artists with compliments and constructive feedback! You might be drawing with artists of differing skill levels, and it’s important to make sure everyone feels welcome and included.

Follow the theme: If you’re participating in an Art Jam, make sure you’ve read the rules and can abide by them. Respect the theme and genre that the canvas owner has selected and avoid drawing content that doesn’t fit what the jam was intended for.

Use the chat wisely: The chat is a space for everyone to communicate while they draw, so don’t use it to disrespect other artists or send an inappropriate volume of messages. Understand that other participants may have different schedules and may not be available to respond immediately.

Report any issues: For Art Jams, you can report inappropriate content by clicking the 3 vertical dots next to the Art Jam’s name and selecting “Report.” If you see someone behaving inappropriately or breaking the rules, you can report this to [email protected]

Managing a Canvas

As a canvas owner, you should do your best to ensure the drawing experience stays safe and enjoyable for everyone. One way to prevent problems is to customize what other artists on the canvas can and can’t do. To access these permissions, click the “Admin” button at the top of your canvas.

When drawing with others on a shared canvas, we recommend:

  • Unchecking “Anyone can take over offline users’ layers” to prevent others from taking over and deleting layers

  • Setting “Paste” permissions to “Admin” to stop people from spamming or pasting unwanted images onto the canvas

  • Setting “Drawing Settings” permissions to “Admin” so only you can modify them

You can find more info on canvas admin controls in this video guide. Note: On any Art Jam, these permissions will be enabled by default.

If a specific person is causing trouble, you can take steps to remove them from your canvas. More information on how to do that can be found in this article.

We hope these tips can help you and your fellow artists have the best drawing experience possible. Have fun, and reach out to us if you have any questions!
