We go back to basic a bit and revisit one of the fundamentals of digital painting in this week’s Magma Classroom LIVE session: Values.

For the months of July and August, our Classroom LIVE and Clubhouse LIVE streams are hosted in partnership with Wacom. A big welcome to our new participants who have found our events through that. With those people in mind, and a few more beginner-level painters joining us, it seemed a good opportunity to do another greyscale still life study to focus on values.

Shout out to Eyebrowl, Cybernaut, Radek, Inapaperforrest, Michael Hammler, Madik9, Harbour, Legav, and Lightingiscooli for joining and spending time on their study with us.

Magma Classroom LIVE 3 July 2023

Value is one of the core aspects of creating strong and believable images. It can help to focus your viewer’s attention but also tell us a lot about the scene’s lighting and the objects within it.

This exercise of painting a group of white objects is a classic one from beginner painting classes, but no matter what stage you are at in your artistic journey, studies like this are always worth revisiting.

Start off with a very simple 5-point value scale: 5 shades of gray ranging from light to dark (but not quite white or black).

Squint your eyes to group shapes of value together.

As you refine the painting, look for bounced light in your shadows causing a gradual shift in value.

Magma Classroom LIVE 6 July 2023

While a painting exercise like this can seem really simple, you can spend a good long while refining those values and smoothing out some of the surfaces if you want to go for that more realistic look.

The Magma Classroom LIVE session with Ryan take place each week with new times for July and August:

  • Monday 11am Central Daylight Time

  • Thursday 11am Central Daylight Time
